The Press has established a national reputation and garnered excellent reviews for its Series on Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Appalachia as well as other books on the region. The Entrepreneurial Development Group was established in 2005 to coordinate the abundant entrepreneurial development organizations in our region. These include the Ohio University Voinovich Center, The Appalachian Center for Economic Networks, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Buckeye Hills Hocking Valley Revolving Loan Fund, Enterprise Development Corporation, Ohio University Innovation Center, Hocking College, Tri-County Career Center, The Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce and Rural Action.
One of the outcomes of this group is the creation of The Southeastern Ohio Investment Forum, SO..IF. SO...IF introduces owners of potentially high-growth companies to possible investors. The forums are held on a quarterly basis to give entrepreneurs the opportunity to give a 10 minute presentation of their value proposition to potential investors. Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs: Business Development Group
The Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs is an academic center at Ohio University that provides applied research and technical assistance in three key areas – public-service and leadership: entrepreneurship and competitiveness; and energy and the environment. The Voinovich Center leverages state and university funding with local, federal, foundation and other private resources to tackle hundreds of projects each year in the 29 counties of Appalachia Ohio and beyond, helping to build strong communities while providing students with real-world experience. www.voinovichcenter.ohio.edu
Appalachian Collaborative Center (ACCLAIM) is a five-university effort that operates a collaborative doctoral program in rural mathematics education and a research initiative. Our 45 doctoral students come from rural Appalachia and from rural communities in California, Alaska, Arkansas and several other states. Our research has generated about 100 publications, all available online. Many have appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The research initiative is directed from Ohio University. AppalCORPS is an AmeriCorps program in Appalachian Ohio (Appal) that Combines Our Resources to Promote school Success (CORPS). The AppalCORPS program works out of the Literacy Center at Ohio University. The primary focus of the AppalCORPS program is to help elementary students improve their reading skills. The program consists of 30 members who serve as reading tutors for 600 teacher-selected students attending 20 elementary schools in Athens, Belmont, Monroe and Scioto counties who are reading below grade level at the beginning of the year. In addition to helping meet pressing education needs, AppalCORPS members strengthen local communities through the implementation of service projects in partnership with local community-based programs and by recruiting non-AppalCORPS volunteers. www.ohio.edu/literacy/appalcorps.cfm
Jumpstart – Ohio University Zanesville
Jumpstart engages college students in service work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Features intensive one-to-one adult-child interaction which helps preschool children build language and literacy, social, and initiative skills – that provide the necessary groundwork for later academic and social success. www.zanesville.ohiou.edu
Junior Bobcat Camp – Ohio University Eastern
Each summer, children going into the fifth and sixth grades participate in Junior Bobcat Camp, a fun, exciting and educational week-long day camp. The activities are geared to get the children outside and active as much as possible, while also letting the kids interact with professors and administrators in a fun way. Subjects taught in the past have included: team-building, photography, origami, theater, dendrology, ecology, senses, compass use, geo-caching, medieval castles, local history and creative writing. www.eastern.ohiou.edu
Kids on Campus, a rural partnership, empowers underserved, at-risk children and their families in the realization of their full potential through educational, nutritional and recreational opportunities. After school services are provided at six Athens County elementary schools and a six-week summer program serving youth ages 5 - 16 is provided on the campus of Ohio University. www.ohio.edu/kids
McNair Scholars Program
McNair is a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. This program prepares undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Southern Outreach, Teacher Professional Development - Ohio University Southern
Southern Outreach is in its fourth year of serving as a teacher professional development clearinghouse of math, science, reading, language arts, interdisciplinary topics and technology offerings for public and private school educators in southeastern Ohio. Since its inception, the office has acquired over a million dollars in professional development sponsored programs and has served well over 1,000 educators during the course of each year. All professional development programs are designed so that teaching and learning is aligned with national and state achievement standards, with outside evaluations conducted that measure effectiveness. A monthly newsletter is posted on the website www.southernoutreach.org that offers South Region educators information about professional growth opportunities.
Upward Bound College Prep Academy
Upward Bound is a successful pre-college access program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program recruits and provides educational, social and cultural services to potential first-generation college students from 15 high schools in Southeast Ohio and surrounding areas.
Appalachian Rural Health Institute (ARHI)
The mission of ARHI is to foster the creation of interdisciplinary approaches to improve all aspects of rural health. Roles of AHRI include: maintaining a database of interested faculty, facilitating meetings between Ohio University and community members interested in rural health, assisting the Ohio University community with access to resources, encouraging student interest in rural health, and encouraging rural health projects to benefit local and regional communities.

Diabetes Community Kit for Appalachia – Dr. Sharon Denham, Nursing
The Diabetes Community Kit is intended to focus on diabetes prevention and management through care of individuals, families, and communities. Through the use of web based materials, diabetes educators, and community health workers, the intention is to use culturally sensitive and novel approaches to treat diabetes as “a family matter.”
Collaborative Nursing Outreach Program - Ohio University Chillicothe and Berger Health Systems
In rural areas across Ohio and across the nation, there is a great need for nursing graduates to meet the needs of a nursing shortage in local hospitals. Community hospitals, such as Berger Hospital in Circleville, Ohio often compete for graduating nurses with larger tertiary hospitals. In the fall of 2002, Berger Health Systems and Ohio University-Chillicothe Associate Degree Nursing Program developed a partnership to educate local students to become professional nurses in the local community. www.oucweb.chillicothe.ohio.edu

Commitment to our community – this describes Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (OUCOM) Community Health Program and Area Health Education Center. Included will be information about the many free or low cost services provided to the residents of Southeastern Ohio. Go Local Ohio – Southeast is a database (http://www.medlineplus.gov/ose), which will take users to information about health services in their local geographic areas, including hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, support groups, health screening providers and many others. Go Local Ohio – Southeast offers an initial collection of more than 3,000 information records, web sites from the eighteen Southeastern Ohio counties. The Health Sciences Library of Alden Library at Ohio University launched this health service database in conjunction with the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health for the consumers of Southeastern Ohio. www.library.ohio.edu/hsl
Program ACTIVE (Appalachians Coming Together to Increase Vital Exercise)
Program ACTIVE is a collaborative effort between the Department of Psychology at Ohio University and the Athens Community Center. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, Program ACTIVE is a study designed to test the effectiveness of a combination approach to depression treatment in people with type 2 diabetes: cognitive behavioral therapy or “talk” therapy, and exercise. Participants in the study receive free medical exams and cardiac stress tests at the Cornwell Center, a pedometer used to measure steps, a free pass to the Athens Community Center, 6 free exercise classes, and 10 sessions of talk therapy free of charge.
Y.E.S.S. the Youth Experiencing Success in School Program is a school mental health program that has developed through a university-community partnership. The Y.E.S.S. program blends resources and expertise from multiple perspectives to enhance access to high quality services for youth and families. The service goals of the program are to enhance the use of evidence-based interventions in schools, improve academic and behavioral functioning of children, enhance home-school collaboration and support services for parents, provide ongoing collaborative consultation for teachers, augment inter-agency care coordination, and conduct program evaluation.
In the context of the Y.E.S.S. Program, graduate students from Ohio University’s Departments of Psychology and Social Work, who are supervised by a licensed psychologist and who work collaboratively with other community agencies, are placed in elementary schools to provide intensive assessment, treatment and consultation services. www.yessprogram.org
African American Cemetery: Rediscovered!
While engaged in a two-year Appalachian culture research project, students working with Dr. Dave Lucas (OU Southern) discovered a previously lost African American cemetery. The graves were identified and marked and the site named, Sacred Hills Cemetery. www.southern.ohiou.edu/folknography
Appalachian Industries: Iron Furnace and Iron Horse
The old Iron Furnace communities provided work, social relations, and stability to Southern Ohio in the past. Exurban Threats to Folk Architecture Relics in Ohio
This project seeks to cartographically and photographically document historic churches and cemeteries associated with early Pennsylvania –German settlement in the southern Columbus, Ohio metropolitan region.
The Women of Appalachia: Their Heritage and Accomplishments Conference provides an opportunity annually to give recognition to the generations of women with traditions deeply rooted in the past. The EXPO poster session will show conference elements and successes which are achieved through concurrent sessions and nationally recognized speakers; topics ranging from cultural traditions to socio-economic issues, past and present, are examined. Appalachian literature is also showcased at the annual conference through an author’s book signing session and women, young and old, are invited to participate in a juried art show. African Studies
Ohio University's African Studies Program, housed in the Center for
International Studies is a designated Title VI National Resource Center which, in addition to graduate and undergraduate programs, provides local and national outreach opportunities to educate K-12 students, teachers, and community members about the region.
The Institute for the African Child, part of African Studies Program initiatives, provides interdisciplinary leadership for conferences, fellowships, collaborative research and teaching, that will lead to better living standards for the children of Africa. Ohio Valley International Council
The Ohio Valley International Council (OVIC), housed in the Center for International Studies, provides international outreach to the Southeast Ohio community. OVIC coordinates visits by Cultural Consultants (international students or students have lived abroad) to do interactive cultural presentations to schools, community groups and business organizations as well as University classes and organizations. SE Asian Studies
Ohio University's Southeast Asian Studies Program, housed in the Center for International Studies, is a designated Title VI National Resource Center. In addition to offering graduate and undergraduate programs, the Center provides local and national outreach opportunities to educate K-12 students, teachers, and community members about the region, particularly in the area of inter-religious dialogue, civic education, and Islam in Southeast Asia.
A partnership with the Midwest Institute for International and Intercultural Education also facilitates opportunities for faculty affiliated with the Center to conduct workshops and seminars for teachers in two-year community colleges in the Midwest region. The Appalachian Learning Community (ALC) is comprised of persons knowledgeable about, and/or interested in learning more about Appalachia. The group is investigating broad topics associated with teaching and learning in and about Appalachia.

AEP and Cheshire
In the early 1970’s, AEP opened the Gaven Power plant with state-of-the-art systems including pollution controls. The relationship between the village and the facility was never totally smooth, but the worst interaction developed over emissions from a NOx pollution control system that ultimately caused AEP to purchase houses in the village and ‘turn out the village lights.’
It’s Our Universe: Astronomy Outreach
‘It’s Our Universe’ is an ongoing, NASA-funded astronomy public outreach program. Ohio University Southern (OUS) Nature Center
Established in April 1999, the Ohio University Southern Nature Center is administered in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s Wayne National Forest. The OUS Nature Center campus consists of a classroom, laboratory, and exhibit (CLE) building, and a computer lab (OCL) nestled in a natural wooded setting at the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. The center is in close proximity to hardwood forests, lakes, streams, meadows, native wildlife, and miles of trails are available for outdoor educational instruction.
The OUS Natural Wonders Outreach Programs consist of volunteer presenters who go to area schools, libraries and public events, as well as over 70 informal science programs each year targeting K-12 students, such as the Science Wizard, The Reptile Experience, The Rock Hounds, The Wonderful World of Spiders, and Good Plants Gone Bad.
Since the 1999 debut, the OUS Nature Center’s Natural Wonders Outreach Programs have visited more than 60 area schools, libraries and public events, many of the schools annually reaching over 5,000 children and adults each year. In addition, over 3,000 visitors participate in the nature center’s 70 summer programs annually. Dr. Culp, the OUS Science Wizard, was the recipient of Huntington, WV, Herald-Dispatch Zack Binkley Award for Community Service in 2002.
In 2006, the nature center partnered with several members of the community and the Forest Service to present a festival on the cultural history of the area - First Annual Vesuvius Iron Furnace Festival took place. The Festival was a resounding success, with more than 500 visitors. The U.S. Forest Service Eastern Region presented the festival committee with its 2006 Honors Award “Windows on the Past” for outstanding efforts in educating the public about the cultural history of the Hanging Rock Iron Furnace Region. Southeastern Ohio Regional Science & Engineering Fair and District 12 Science Day
Two concurrent science fairs for students in grades 9 to 12 and for students in grades 5 through 12 respectively. The purpose of these science fairs is to encourage inquiry based learning through scientific research by providing a venue where their research projects are displayed and judged and numerous prizes are awarded. Students with outstanding projects are advanced to other state, national, and international competitions as well as presentation in professional meetings. www.ohio.edu/scifair
