Building upon the work of the Appalachian Learning Community , the Appalachian Studies Group received a planning grant from the 1804 Fund in 2006. The group’s activities include benchmark visits to other Appalachian Studies centers, forums, and a plan to develop a proposal for a new center this summer.
The most important undertaking of the group was hosting the first institution-wide discussion about what it means, or could mean, for Ohio University to be a leader among higher education institutions in the Appalachian region.
The April 13th and 14th event began on Friday evening at a reception with Ohio University’s Swallow Press featuring their collection of publications about Appalachia. The conference keynote by Dr. Helen Lewis followed at 6pm.
Dr. Lewis was the President of the Appalachian Studies Association in 2001-2002 and Director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College in the early 1990s. Formerly on the staff of the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee, Dr. Lewis established the first Appalachian Studies program in the early 1970’s and has taught at more than half a dozen Appalachian colleges and universities. She is the recipient of Berea College’s 2006 Service Award.
