The partnership seeks to raise awareness and promotion of cancer prevention methods and to reduce and/or eliminate the health-care barriers in the 29-county region of Appalachian Ohio where levels of lung, colon and cervical cancer are markedly higher than the state average. The partnership began in 2002, with continued funding through 2008.
Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia to serve as a model and resources for other isolated, rural, poverty-stricken areas across the country.
The two primary goals of ACCLAIM in these Appalachian regions are to:
build mathematics capacity and expertise through advanced degree programs in mathematics, job-embedded professional development for middle and high school mathematics, and research that connects mathematics and rural education
improve the quality of mathematics teacher education programs and mathematics teaching at the middle and high school levels in these Appalachian regions through the development of collaborative networks and innovative delivery systems
ACCLAIM links resources from the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, Marshall University, Ohio University and the University of Tennessee - Knoxville with the Appalachian Rural Systemic Initiative (ARSI). Four universities represent each initiative: capacity building, professional development, teacher education and research. Ohio University is the host site for the Research Initiative.

Classic films representing a variety of themes and cultures will be presented year-round. Guest speakers introduce each film and lead a discussion after the screening. Offering "the very best of classic cinema, underground film, and cult retrospectives," the Cinematheque screenings and designed to give Ohio University students and the Athens community a deeper appreciation and understanding of film culture. Cinematheque is free for Ohio University students and local high school students. General admission is $4.

Organized in 1979, The Athens Community Music School is committed to providing professional and qualified music instruction, educational programs, and music therapy services to persons of all ages and abilities in Athens and Southeast Ohio. Our instructors include faculty members from the Ohio University School of Music, Affiliate Faculty (teachers with a master's degree in music and many years of teaching experience), and qualified graduate and undergraduate students in the School of Music.
The Athens Film and Video Festival was founded in 1974, and since than has annually presented guest film and media artists from around the world.
